19 January

Today was our first day of “work” here in Mbeya. We live walking distance from the hospital where all the offices are but for the first week or two we are getting rides there and back until we are more familiar with things. We got to see some of Mbeya and the surrounding areas (including a cement factory...) on Sunday afternoon but I think it’s going to take a while to figure out the layout of things. Anyways back to work. Apparently we will be getting our own office which is supposed to be ready tomorrow so today we sat at an empty desk in Dr. Mboya’s (director-ish). Dr. Tambukwa (our supervisor) showed us around the hospital complex some and then passed us along to Mama Martha (one of the head nurses) who took us around the hospital even more...we meet a billion people and I remember maybe 3 names. All afternoon we sat around waiting for a car to come back to take us around town again but all the vehicles were out so eventually one of the staff members brought us home. Hopefully tomorrow will be more eventful but I learned in Ghana that sometimes finding things to do takes a little (or a lot) of time.

Today was our first day with internet which was wonderful (sad how much we rely on it) but it felt nice to be connected to the rest of the world. This evening the IT guy from the office and some random man in a sweater vest (apparently upper 60s is cold) fixed the internet in the house which is great. It (mostly) works as long as the power doesn’t go out which it has multiple times (in fact, the generator is going now). A few other random things: We had rice and beef stew and what I think are broccoli leaves for dinner (it tasted just fine). There is a cat that sits on our front porch and meows obnoxiously loudly. The bananas here are pinky sized but fat and are sweet and very tasty.
